List of banned and restricted areas 2025
- Kratom is still legal in most jurisdictions (within the United States and most parts of the world). However, when it comes to kratom legality in the United States the landscape is still volatile and there is always the possibility for sudden and unprecedented change. Thanks to advocate groups like the American Kratom Association there have been essential steps taken to keeping kratom legal, and rolling back legislation in areas where kratom was once banned. Major progress has been made through education.
- Unfortunately, around 2015/2016 a wave of drug related incidents, connected to legal synthetics, ravaged the Unite States and overwhelmed emergency services. This caused a panic in many areas which lumped kratom in with synethic drugs such as K2, Spice and Kraton. Many of these areas banned or scheduled kratom under the assumption that it was the same thing as these synthetic drugs. Thanks to advocacy, and education, some of these areas have rolled back their legislation. The future looks promising for more areas to do the same thing. None the less, there are still states, cities and counties where kratom is banned/not legal and we have a list here.

- Banned areas (2024):States: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.
- Counties: Illinois (Jerseyville, Alton, Edwardsville, Glen Carbon), Florida (Sarasota County), Louisiana (Ascension, Grant, Rapides), Mississippi (Alcorn, Itawamba, Calhoun, Lowndes, Noxubee, Monroe, Pearl River, Tippah, Prentiss, Tishomingo, Union)
- Cities: California (within the city limits of San Diego,Oceanside), Mississippi ( Belmont, Booneville, Blue Mountain, Bruce, Burnsville, Calhoun City, Caledonia, Columbus, Corinth, Fulton, Derma, Guntown, Mantachie, Iuka, Marietta, New Albany, Oxford, Okolona, Pontotoc, Ripley, Senatobia, Saltillo, Tishomingo City, Vardaman).
- There are a few grey areas where kratom is technically still legal but with conditions:
- Colorado (Denver only). Kratom is legal to sell/purchase but not as a consumable.
- We've also included areas where there are age restrictions in place. We suspect that more states will pass the Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA) going forward. The KCPA has a list of conditions but the primary one requires a person to be 18+ years of age to purchase and/or use kratom.
- Here is a list of areas which have implemented KCPA or other age restrictions:
- Must be 18+ years of age: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia.
- Must be 21+ years of age: Illinois (Naperville), Massachusetts (North Attleboro), Tennessee.
